Secondary Education Initial Licensing Program

We seek to create as many entry options into the Secondary Education Initial Licensing program, so we have removed barriers such as ACT/SAT score requirements for entry. Placement test in mathematics level scores is needed to ensure you can finish your program in four years.

  • High school GPA of 2.8
  • Mathematic licensing: mathematics placement test into Calculus 1051or higher
  • Science licensing: mathematics placement test in Math 1044 or higher
  • Two program start times: spring semester and fall semester
  • Completed at least 75% of disciplinary content for licensing area
  • Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0
  • Minimum disciplinary content GPA of 2.8
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Ability to obtain a Pre-Service Teaching Permit

 

  • Pre-cohort education course work completed with a C or better which requires
    • Acquisition of your Pre-Service Teaching Permit (PSTP)
    • Two early field experiences of 10 hours of work in local schools or education centers
    • Completion of 18 hours of education course work     
  • Disciplinary content coursework defined for your licensing area completed with a C or better
  • Acquisition of your Pre-Service Teaching Permit (PSTP)
  • Graduate students are admitted directly into the secondary education cohort
  • Fall start students complete 12 to 15 credits of the CI Masters plus licensing core requirements
  • Spring Start students complete nine credits of CI Masters plus licensing core requirement and the appropriate Introductory Secondary Methods Course and Secondary Practicum I
  • Completion of Intent to Progress (ITP) survey
    • GPA overall and disciplinary content checks
    • Progress towards on time degree completion
    • Professional dispositions review (PSTP, course attendance concerns, …)
  • Advisor meeting
  • GPA check
  • Professional dispositions review (PSTP, course attendance concerns, …)
  • Field clinical progress for spring start

All students:

  • 70 hour field clinical placement in licensure area with licensed mentor teacher
  • Professional seminar: One hour
  • Secondary introductory methods: discipline-specific
  • Undergraduate students: Upper-level disciplinary content as needed
  • Graduate students: Six to nine credits of CI masters and licensing core courses
  • Completion of Intent to Progress (ITP) survey
    • GPA overall and disciplinary content checks
    • Progress towards on time degree completion
    • Professional dispositions review (PSTP, course attendance concerns, …)
  • Advisor meeting
  • GPA check
  • Professional dispositions review (PSTP, course attendance concerns, …)

All Students:

  • Complete remaining disciplinary content course work
  • Secondary Intermediate Methods (discipline specific)
  • Disciplinary Literacy all except ELA
  • Professional seminar: one hour
  • Half-day practicum/student teaching in licensure area
    • Starts with the beginning of the placement schools academic year
    • Four hours/bells, including three instructional and one planning bell with mentor
    • Scaffolded teaching experiences from August to October
    • November to December increased independent teaching (full responsibility for one class)
    • Pre-CPAST

All students:

  • GPA overall and disciplinary content checks
  • Progress towards on time degree completion
  • Professional dispositions review
  • Field Clinical review
  • Recommend completion of content OAEs
  • Apply for graduation

All students:

  • Continuation of half-day student teaching in licensure area
    • Continue in 3 instructional classes and 1 planning bell with mentor
    • Full teaching responsibility for all three instructional classes
    • edTPA completion
    • undergraduate capstone
    • CPAST
  • Final day of student teaching, start of Spring exam week
