Why study Blended Online Learning and Teaching?

The Blended and Online Learning Technology graduate certificate provides students the competencies and skillsets in both education and technology to integrate multimedia into blended and online learning settings. The UC BOLT program leverages a pedagogy for online and blended teaching and learning processes to help learners thrive in today’s classrooms. The curriculum draws from fields of education, design, and information technology. Students will develop the skills in eLearning authoring tools to design, manage, and lead online classrooms. Our students are also able to obtain a professional certification in a variety of recommended industry tools such as Apple, Google, Microsoft, Adobe, and more!

Admission Requirements

The University of Cincinnati welcomes graduate applications from students who:

  • Hold a baccalaureate degree from a college or university regarded as standard by a regional or general accrediting agency and
  • Have at least a B average (3.0/4.0 system) in relevant undergraduate coursework or otherwise give evidence of promise that is judged satisfactory by the admitting program and the Graduate School.
  • Goal Statement: A typewritten statement about professional goals should be submitted that includes brief narratives about: a) previous professional experiences; b) immediate and long-range goals; and c) how the BOLT certificate will help you to meet your goals.
  • One (1) Letter of Recommendation

The required documents for application are noted in the Criteria for Admission. Application to all graduate studies at the University of Cincinnati is fully online and all application materials. Please go to the Graduate School website to submit your application.

Effective July 1, 2011, federal regulations published in the Federal Register on October 29, 2010 [75 FR 66665 and FR 66832] by the U.S. Department of Education require postsecondary institutions that participate in the student financial assistance programs authorized under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (HEA), as amended, to disclose to prospective students certain information about the institution's GE Programs.

Generally, GE Programs include:

  • At public and private not-for-profit institutions: Title IV-eligible non-degree programs (e.g., certificate and diploma programs).
  • At for-profit institutions: All Title-IV eligible instructional programs, degree and non-degree.

Instructors successful in the online and blended environment understand the challenges and benefits of developing, delivering and managing online and blended learning. They can successfully apply learning theory and sound pedagogical practices to the online environment and are focused on student success and delivering engaging, collaborative, active learning experiences. Educators in this field need to be able to collaborate with and accept feedback from colleagues in the field with the goal of continuous improvement of their courses. Willingness to learn new technology, flexibility, organization, and openness to new and innovative ideas are also key traits of successful educators in this field. Successful online educators should have a passion for creating e-learning opportunities learners can universally access and value and support a diverse group of learners.

The Blended and Online Learning and Teaching graduate certificate is applicable to a wide range of educational environments including K-12, higher education, medical education, public education, and corporate training. Instructors in this certificate are current practitioners and leaders in the field, and course materials and activities incorporate the overarching methodology and latest trends in online teaching and learning.  Students will experience online learning first hand and practice the skills needed to succeed in the online teaching and learning in every stage of their coursework.

Graduating from this graduate certificate program requires:

  1. That the student be registered for at least one credit in their program in the academic year, after having met minimum degree course requirements to be considered a graduate candidate throughout the academic year.
  2. Have all NG, N, I, UP, SP and F grades removed for degree courses.
  3. Posting of satisfactory grades for the semester of graduation.
  4. Obtain a minimum of a 3.0 GPA
  5. Satisfactory completion of all applicable College and program requirements is provided by the major advisor filling out the Checklist for Completion of College/Department requirements for Graduation and sending it to the Graduate School.

International student applicants are required to provide specific information about their transcripts or degree programs to facilitate the applicant review process, including transcript translation and evaluation by a recognized translation/evaluation agency.

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or successful completion of ELS Level 112, is required of all applicants whose native language is not English. The TOEFL must have been taken within the two-­-year period preceding admission.

Expectations for TOEFL scores are:

  • a minimum of 550 (paper test), 213 (computer-based test), or 79-­-80 (internet-based test)
  • a minimum score on the Test of Written English (TWE) of 4.5
  • a minimum score of 50 on the Test of Spoken English.

Application Deadlines

Prospective students will complete the online application for their requested program by the posted application deadline. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all required materials and support documents are successfully submitted. Incomplete applications will not be processed or reviewed. Application deadlines are as follows:

Fall Semester: July 1

Spring Semester: November 15

Summer Semester: April 1
