Information Technology

What is Information Technology?

The Bachelor of Science in Information Technology is a broad program of study encompassing all aspects of computing technology. Information technology, as an academic discipline, focuses on meeting the needs of users within organizational and societal contexts through the selection, creation, application, integration and administration of computing technologies. Information technology is a discipline distinct from computer engineering, computer science and management information systems.

The BSIT program at the University of Cincinnati provides broad foundation in the areas of software application development (Web, mobile, enterprise and desktop), networking and systems administration (including technologies for data centers and storage), database management (design and administration) and digital media (development of digital images, audio and video to support IT solutions) and cybersecurity. The students' experience is culminated by the senior design experience - a two-semester exploration developing a real-life IT solution. Students present their senior projects to the community in an IT technology expo at the end of the spring semester of every year.

In addition to the broad foundation, each student gains in-depth knowledge and skills in one of four areas: networking and systems, software application development, cybersecurity and coming in fall 2017 game development and simulation .

The Networking/Systems concentration combines courses in the complementary areas of computer networking and systems administration, both of which support the smooth operation, administration, integration, and security of computing resources. The computer networking area involves designing, implementing, securing and administering the pathways by which information flows between computing devices by configuring the devices, routers, switches, firewalls, intrusion prevention systems, wireless access points, etc. Systems administration, on the other hand, is managing the operating systems of the many different computing devices, such as servers (Linux, Windows, etc), desktops (Windows, Mac OS, Linux, etc), smart phones and tablets (Android, iOS, etc). This includes administering and securing users' access to applications and data in the complex connected world of the enterprise.

The Software Application Development concentration equips students with skills to develop software solutions for users and organizations. It covers the complementary areas of desktop applications, Web applications and mobile applications. Students learn how to develop software solutions and gain skills in some of the most commonly used development platforms (Windows, Android, Java and Mac). The software application track cover broad array of software applications such as personal productivity, entertainment, games, business productivity, enterprise integration, platform development and integration among others. Courses in the desktop areas cover technologies such as Java and C# (.NET) that enables users to develop complex software running different operating systems. The Web application courses cover technologies for the client side (the Web pages), business logic (modules that implement different users and organizational rules and regulations) as well as infrastructure (modules that connect the Web application with database systems, security among others). Technologies such as Java Enterprise Edition and Microsoft .NET framework (C# and Active Server Pages) are covered. The mobile applications courses focus on developing software applications that runs on smart phones, tablets and other handheld devices. Students learn about the major operating systems for mobile devices such as Apple iOS, Google Android among others. In addition, students learn to use different integrated development environments (IDEs) and different tools for software design (Unified Modeling Language or UML) and software testing.

The Cybersecurity concentration will prepare graduates for one of the fastest growing and most rewarding careers in IT.  Students will learn both theories and hands-on skills of software and hardware security tools to design secure systems and protect enterprise information and network assets. They will gain expertise in investigating computer related crimes and identifying the resources exploited by cyber-criminals and terrorists. They will also learn how to apply standards, models, and best practices to solve real world issues and draft security policies to mitigate risks and threats of today’s IT infrastructure. The Cybersecurity track focuses on practical skills that are required by IT security professional positions, including but not limited to vulnerability analyst, incident response specialist, penetration tester, intrusion detection specialist, and secure code auditor.

COMING FALL 2017 - The Game Development and Simulation concentration combines a solid foundation in game programming with a focus on the interdisciplinary nature of game development and production. By completing this track, students will gain a complete spectrum of skills that are needed for exploring the entertainment and interactive technology landscape and related area, for example: reflection (values, attitudes, and perspectives), imagination (game ideas), composing and storytelling (express values, attitudes and perspectives in a story), visualization (visualize this story in an interactive form of gaming), implementation (using game engines, programming and scripting), sociability (interacting with players and teammates; engaging in online/offline communities), test and debug, publishing, and distribution. Students graduating from this program will be capable of developing next-generation games and simulations in the interactive technology fields. Many other fields, including mobile software development, interactive entertainment, and training and education software, have demand for similar skill sets and knowledge. In addition, graduates from this program will be able to further their education in graduate programs or any career that involves designing, developing, implementing, evaluating or interacting with computer-based systems.

Successful professionals in the information technology field are those who are passionate about using computer technology to provide solutions to issues facing individuals, societies and organizations. They welcome change, are hardworking and are eager to learn new things. They love to spend time in front of the computer and are not afraid to try new things. They are interested in developing good problem solving skills and good communication habits.

Career Possibilities

Information technology careers lead all other careers in projected job growth in this decade, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

The IT professional is hired by organizations of all sizes in all industries. Typical positions held by recent graduates include software developer, programmer, web developer, network administrator/manager, system administrator, network engineer, information security analyst, help center analyst, internet engineer, IT consultant, business systems consultant, implementation engineer and OS analyst.

Recent employers include: General Electric, Kroger Company, Cardinal Solutions, Cincom Systems, Convergys, Duke Energy, Ford Motor Co., General Mills, Sigma Tek, and UGS among many others.

Minoring in Information Technology

A minor in information technology (IT) provides solid knowledge and skills for students who are non-IT majors. The minor program requires the completion of 18 semester hours of IT courses that includes IT1050. The remaining courses are to be selected by the student and approved by the academic advisor. This flexibility enables students to focus the minor in IT on their personal interests and career goals.

UC Advantages and Special Opportunities

The information technology program in the UC College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services the first program in Ohio and one of the first ten in the nation to receive accreditation from the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology. The program is uniquely designed to provide hands-on experience in the core foundation of information technology. Almost all major courses are hands-on, requiring projects and lab experience. Students participate and complete a two-semester senior design experience, in which they develop a real life IT solution and present it to the community in the annual IT tech expo.

In addition to the unique hands-on experience in the classroom, the UC IT program requires five semesters of cooperative education (co-op). Beginning their sophomore year, students alternate semesters of paid work in the IT industry with semesters of classroom instruction. The fulltime paid co-op working experience positions IT graduates to have over one year of work experience at the time of their graduation, making them highly competitive for career opportunities. The UC co-op program provides local, national and international placement opportunities.

The UC IT program emphasizes problem solving, communication, ands-on skills and integration with the organization core mission or the user's core interests. The program emphasizes integrated information technology in which the technology serves the mission and interest of the users and the organization.

Special Programs

Honors Program—The University of Cincinnati honors program offers small, interactive classes that allow students to receive personalized instruction and to learn more effectively. The honors program enriches the educational experience of top students through course work and out-of-class experiences. Special topics courses allow honors students to broaden their intellectual horizons regardless of the discipline in which they are majoring. Students may also earn honors credit through experiential learning. Incoming freshmen are eligible to be invited to participate.

Student Organizations—To develop professionally and showcase leadership talents, many professional and social organizations exist in the college.

Study Abroad—Study-abroad opportunities exist through the UC International Programs office. Students can study anywhere in the world on any type of program as long as they work with UC International Programs, get approval from their academic adviser and bring back a transcript with passing grades from an accredited institution. There are four different types of study-abroad experiences: UC programs, exchange programs, program providers and direct enrollment.

Cooperative Education (co-op)—The five semesters full time paid co-op working experience provides students with unique technical and interpersonal skills that highly prepare them for career opportunities of their choice. Local, regional and international companies in all types of industries and all sizes participated in this program offering IT student’s unique opportunities. The income received helps many students graduate debt-free.

Information Technology Expo (IT Tech Expo)—This annual community event is a unique tradition of the IT program at UC. Senior students present the IT solution they developed in their senior project to the community in an expo like environment. Students learn how to communicate the complex technical solution and project its impact and value to the public. Projects are judged by local industry and each year, multiple awards are presented.
