Changing Offender Behavior
All UCCI developed curricula are based on the RNR framework. Specifically, they are designed for moderate to high risk offenders and focus on key criminogenic needs. A social learning cognitive-behavioral approach combined with a motivational enhancement approach comprise the major behavioral change strategies. Curricula can be used in a standalone program or in combination as a part of a more comprehensive treatment package. Developed by UCCI and in cooperation with our partners, our programs are designed to help group participants identify their own risk situations and apply tool/techniques to their own unique risky profiles.
UC's Cognitive-Behavioral Interventions for Offenders - Core Curriculum
Cognitive-Behavioral Interventions – Core Curriculum (CBI-CC) is designed to provide a thorough intervention that broadly targets all criminogenic needs. As the name suggests, this intervention relies on a cognitive behavioral approach to teach participants strategies to manage risk factors. The program places heavy emphasis on skill building activities to assist with cognitive, social, emotional, and coping skill development. CBI-CC includes a pre-treatment module as well as modules targeting motivation, cognitive restructuring, emotional regulation, social skills, problem solving, and success planning. The curriculum provides modifications so that individuals with mental illness can participate, though it is not dedicated exclusively to this population. Using a modified closed group format with multiple entry points, the curriculum is designed to allow for flexibility across various service settings and intervention lengths. This curriculum provides separate versions for both adult and juvenile populations.
UC's Cognitive-Behavioral Interventions - Employment
Cognitive-Behavioral Interventions - Employment (CBI-EMP) is designed for justice-involved individuals who are moderate to high need in the area of employment. In comparison to traditional employment approaches, CBI-EMP emphasizes approaches to manage risky behavior and thoughts within the workplace. The curriculum integrates cognitive-behavioral interventions with more traditional employment approaches. The program teaches individuals how to identify and manage high risk situations related to obtaining and maintaining employment. Heavy emphasis is placed on skill building activities to assist with cognitive, social, emotional, and coping skill development for the work environment. The curriculum includes modules targeting motivation, basic job seeking skills, cognitive restructuring, emotional regulation and social skills development, problem solving, and success planning. Using a modified closed group format with multiple entry points, the curriculum is designed to allow for flexibility across various service settings and intervention lengths.
UC's Cognitive-Behavioral Interventions - Sexual Offending
Cognitive-Behavioral Intervention - Sexual Offending (CBI-SO) is a structured curriculum intended for individuals who are moderate to high need in the area of sexual offending and related behaviors. This curriculum can be delivered as a stand-alone intervention or incorporated into larger programs, particularly those designed for clients in the correctional system. As the name of the curriculum suggests, this intervention relies on a cognitive-behavioral approach to teach participants strategies for avoiding sexual offending and related behaviors. Specifically, the program emphasizes skill-building activities to assist with cognitive, social, emotional, and coping skills development. The goal is to increase the value participants place on pro-social thoughts and choices.

UC's Cognitive-Behavioral Interventions - Substance Abuse
The Cognitive-Behavioral Interventions - Substance Abuse (CBI-SA) curriculum is designed for individuals that are moderate to high need in the area of substance abuse and well suited for criminal justice populations. The curriculum can be delivered as a stand-alone substance abuse intervention, or incorporated into a larger program, particularly those designed for clients in the corrections system. As the name of the curriculum suggests, this intervention relies on a cognitive behavioral approach to teach participants strategies for avoiding substance abuse. The program places heavy emphasis on skill building activities to assist with cognitive, social, emotional, and coping skill development. Such cognitive behavioral strategies have routinely demonstrated high treatment effects, including when used with a correctional population. The curriculum is non-proprietary, but training is required. The components of the curriculum include pretreatment (optional), Motivational Enhancement, Cognitive Restructuring, Emotional Regulation, Social Skills, Problem Solving, and Relapse Prevention. This curriculum provides separate versions for both adult and juvenile populations.

Aggression Replacement Training ®
This training is available through a partnership with Educational Treatment Alternatives, Inc. Aggression Replacement Training® is a cognitive behavioral intervention program to help children and adolescents improve social skill competence and moral reasoning, better manage anger, and reduce aggressive behavior and ultimately reduce recidivism. Program techniques are designed to teach youths how to control their angry impulses and take perspectives other than their own. Aggression Replacement Training® consists of on site training plus an initial on line session to occur before the training. This curriculum provides separate versions for both adult and juvenile populations.
Group Intervention Quality Assurance Training
One way to ensure fidelity to a model is to implement quality assurance measures for those directly using a program or intervention. Quality Assurance is most influential when program oversite is maintained by a team of staff who that can be trained to effectively coach staff of the program or intervention. This training will teach skills needed for staff to serve in a coaching role and effectively supervise others to help maintain program fidelity. This course can be provided as a standalone training, but is most beneficial when paired with training on a group curriculum as a 1-day add on to an existing training event.
Core Correctional Practices
Core Correctional Practices (CCP) training instructs correctional workers on the core skills needed to support behavioral change. The training is relevant all staff working with offenders. Specific topics to be discussed include: (a) a brief description of the principles of effective interventions (b) an overview of the core correctional practices (e.g. relationships skills, effective use of reinforcement, effective use of disapproval, effective use of authority, pro-social modeling, cognitive restructuring, social skills training and problem solving skills), (c) practice of each of the core correctional practices occurs and implementation strategies are discussed, (d) principles of an effective behavior management system are emphasized. This training may be combined with the Cognitive-Behavioral Interventions training for a three day training that additionally trains staff on how to facilitate cognitive-behavioral structured skill-building groups for offenders.

This training provides participants with an overview of Motivational Interviewing (MI) and how to use these skills to promote positive behavior change. The training introduces Motivational Interviewing as a collaborative, person-centered form of guiding to elicit and strengthen motivation for change. It covers the basics of MI, the practical guidelines in the applications of MI, and the specific skills related to MI.
