SCHOOL OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE

Gene Carte Memorial Award for Outstanding Scholarship

Headshot of Bryce Noonan

Bryce Noonan – Criminal Justice

The University of Cincinnati and the College of Criminal Justice gave me a rich and diverse learning experience, even when the pandemic caused so much change. I was able to learn from experienced professors in-person and virtually, connect with students while serving as a campus RA, and give back to my bearcat community while serving at the Bearcat Pantry. Criminal Justice also gave me the opportunity to take my knowledge into the field, where I was able to work with an organization helping human trafficking victims in the Ohio area. It was this experience that sparked my desire to work in the non-profit sector in the future and continue to use my criminal justice background in a supportive and preventive role.

Headshot of Jenny Deuel

Jenny Deuel - Early Childhood Education

"Jenny Deuel is the recipient of the Outstanding Student Award for the ECE Online Bachelor Birth - 5 program. She received her Associate Degree in Early Childhood Development and Education in 2021 from UC as well. Jenny first worked in the early childhood field at age 22 when she was hired at a private preschool and childcare center as a teacher’s aide. At that time, she had a year of college experience at Bowling Green State University. Although Jenny always wanted to be a teacher, she became unsure about what age or grade she wanted to teach. She worked at the preschool/childcare center for 2 years, right up until she had her first daughter, and then she decided to stay home with her daughter. She had another daughter 2 years later and decided that she would go back into the work force once her youngest entered kindergarten. Jenny babysat for friends and family while staying home for those 8 years with her daughters. In 2016, when her youngest daughter entered kindergarten, Jenny was offered a job at a local private preschool and childcare center, again as a teacher’s aide. She was approached by the owner of the center about taking classes towards an education in early childhood and was offered the T.E.A.C.H Ohio scholarship. Jenny began slowly, but surely, working towards an associate’s degree and afterwards, a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education. Jenny has been the center administrator and lead preschool teacher for the past 5 school years, at the same center where she began in 2016. She has learned so much valuable information from her courses at UC. She is very passionate about everything from developmentally appropriate practice to child-led, hands-on learning and has become very passionate about teaching preschool. Jenny couldn’t have accomplished her goals if it were not for her husband and two daughters supporting her, and helping pick up the slack as she has worked full time while taking courses at UC over the past several years. "
