Secondary School Information

The Secondary Education Program welcomes you!

This web page will be used throughout your time in the program and contains information you will need to be familiar with to support you on your journey to becoming an educator.

All Secondary students are required to be read and understand the Secondary Education Program Handbook. This handbook outlines the policies and procedures of the program. Please contact the Secondary Program Coordinator or the Secondary Field Coordinator with any questions you have regarding the contents of the handbook.

Professional Cohort Year 1 - Junior Year

During Spring Semester candidates in their first year of professional cohort participate in a field experience known as Practicum I. Candidates in Practicum I are assigned a mentor in an area school by the Secondary Field Coordinator. The chart below identifies the forms candidates are responsible for completing during Year 1 of the Professional Cohort. The Secondary Field Coordinator will provide more specific deadlines for all documents at the beginning of the term they are due.

Candidate Placement Survey

Placement surveys gather candidateâ s current contact information for placement purposes. Candidates have the opportunity to identify personal needs, conflicts of interest, and school preferences. Students are not guaranteed placements at preferred sites.

Goal Setting Agreement (DOC)

This document guides candidates through the process of reflecting on strengths and opportunities to set goals for professional growth. This document should be downloaded, completed, and discussed in a triad meeting between you, your mentor teacher, and your university supervisor.

Candidate Evaluation Survey

This survey is critical to ensuring quality placements. The survey will ask you to rate your experiences with your university supervisor, mentor teacher, and placement school. This information is used for the purpose of strengthening our placement processes.

Professional Cohort Year 2 - Senior Year

During the final year of professional cohort candidates participate in a field experience known as Internship. Candidates in internship participate in 3 field experiences with the same mentor teacher. Internships are assigned by the Secondary Field Coordinator.

There are three stages to internship:

  • Practicum II
  • Student Teaching I
  • Student Teaching II

The Attendance, Professionalism, and Preparedness form is used to support candidates and mentors in routine communication about candidate performance. This form must be completed according to the deadlines and instructions in the Practicum II Seminar course.

Observation Form (DOC) This observation form is used by both university supervisors and mentor teachers to provide written feedback on observed instruction to candidates. Candidates are encouraged to video record their instruction and use this form for self-evaluation as well.

Collaborative Assessment Log (CAL) (PDF) 

This document can be voluntarily used by candidates and mentors to support discussion of professional growth. In some situations, the program or the mentor may require for CALs to be completed to facilitate open communication.
