Kristen Haddad, a doctoral student in the Educational and Community-Based Action Research concentration, recently published her first, first-authored article on the relationships between urban stressors and psychosocial needs for high schoolers attending an urban, Midwestern school. The following narrative was written by Mecka Graham, recent graduate of the ESC Masters Program: “After graduating from UC, I started my first professional career with Cincinnati Children's Hospital in the Community Relations Department as a temporary project manager. This is an opportunity for me to coordinate with community relations leadership, medical departments across the hospital, and the wider Cincinnati community--including their unique relationship to Avondale. I spend 80% of my job supporting major events and projects such as First Ladies For Health 2017, community health fairs, and the capacity building grant funding available to organizations throughout Avondale. My graduate assistantship at UC's Center for Community Engagement prepared me for volunteer coordination and delivering data-related program updates. The other 20% of my job is spent in Cincinnati Children's INNOVATIONS department. Knowledge gained from my Master in Educational Studies and Social Change with a specialization in Action Research prepared me for the community research and evaluation this position entails. I help with INNOVATIONS mission to provide program evaluation services, program consulting, and technical assistance, grant writing, and more. One of my favorite parts about my job is learning from experts such as Monica Mitchell and John Scott. They are "veterans" in this field who have a lot to share.”
Amy Rector-Aranda graduated with her PhD in ECAR in Spring 2017, and has since secured employment as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Texas A&M University with joint appointments in Urban, ESL, and Multicultural Education; Teacher Education, Technology, and Curriculum and Instruction. Amy works within the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Culture at the College of Education and Human Development.
Congrats to Dr. Lisa Vaughn (EDST/ECAR faculty) and Heather Vilvens (EDST/ECAR doctoral student) who were key researchers on the Ohio AAP’s Safe Sleep Messaging Project. They received the 2017 Ohio Injury Prevention Partnership’s Promising Practice Award.
Sheva Guy, a doctoral candidate in the ECAR program, has been offered a full-time position coordinating the Biomedical Informatics PhD program through UC’s College of Medicine and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. This position involves managing student progress throughout the program, aiding in recruitment and admissions, event planning, and proposal writing. Sheva is planning on incorporating new and innovative advising and marketing strategies into this interdisciplinary program. Additionally, Sheva has recently published her first article, "Movers, Shakers, & Everyone in Between: Faculty Personas Surrounding Active Learning in the Undergraduate STEM Classroom,” which can be found here.
Dr. Miriam Raider-Roth, a professor of educational studies and ARC steering committee member, is the author of a new book exploring innovative approaches to teacher education, "Professional Development in Relational Learning Communities". This text offers an innovative approach to teacher professional development that builds on the intellectual strength and practical wisdom of practitioners; more details are available here.
