Information Technology

Information Technology (IT) is one of the fastest growing disciplines in graduate education today. The reason is simple - Every industry needs IT. We live in a networked, electronic world and rely on always available, secure systems to live, work, and play. We have electronic classrooms, health records, manufacturing, etc. The field of IT is responsible for building, managing, and securing these global systems. There is no other field of study that cuts through so many domains and has such on impact on the world.

UC's Master of Science in Information Technology gives you the hands on skills to immediately solve problems in all of these industries. Mobile and Social applications and security are the top industry concerns today.  With our world increasingly becoming electronic, we must work within mobile and social networks and secure all of the information transferred and stored every day. The MSIT program allows a focus on cybersecurity, IT infrastructure, game development or mobile and social development to prepare students to secure software applications, networks, and systems or transform our digital lives.  These skills are a vital part of every organization.

Major Details

The School of Information Technology offers the Master of Science in IT degree program. This master’s program is designed for individuals wishing to gain graduate level knowledge, practical problem solving skills, and cutting edge IT research capacity that are currently sought by IT industries and government agencies. The program is designed to be completed within one year by dedicated full time students after earning 30 credit hours. However, students can finish the program in multiple years if the individuals entered the program from a non-computing academic background and bridge or prerequisite courses are needed prior to taking the core courses.

UC Advantages and Special Opportunities

The undergraduate program in Information Technology has been consistently growing at the University of Cincinnati with a little over 1000 alumni already in the workplace. The program has been growing at a 15% rate since 2012. The demand of IT graduates from the nation and especially the Greater Cincinnati Area is very high that we have achieved 100% student job placement. The School of Information Technology (SoIT)’s industrial advisory board is comprised of about 37 Information Technology professionals and alumni representing a wide range of sectors and technology domains.

Admission Requirements

The admission requirements are:

  1. A baccalaureate degree from a college or university regarded as standard by a regional or general accrediting agency
  2. At least a B average (3.0/4.0 system) in undergraduate course work.  If the applicant has a lower GPA they must either give evidence of promise that is judged satisfactory by the admitting program and the Graduate School or complete 12 credit hours of specified IT bridge courses with a 3.0 GPA prior to admission into the program.
  3. Transcripts of all college or university grades.  Note: for the application you may upload unofficial transcripts; however, if admitted you will need to submit your official transcripts.
  4. Current resume or curriculum vitae
  5. Two letters of reference from individuals who know you professionally or academically
  6. A personal statement
  7. International Students Required to Take English Proficiency Test: TOEFL minimum Paper-based 520, Computer-based 190, Internet-based 80 or IELTS minimum 6.5.
  8. GRE is waived for qualified applicants

Transferring to UC Requirements

Transferring or waiving credit hours from other UC or outside graduate programs is highly unlikely. But students may waive the bridge or prerequisite courses with exceptional work experience in the IT fields.  Please consult with the graduate director and coordinator for waiving courses and transfer graduate credits. 

International Student Requirements

International students must submit an updated TOEFL score with a minimum score of 520 (paper based) or 190 (computer-based) or 68 (Internet-based.

Graduation Requirements

To complete the program, the student must complete 30 graduate credit hours including nine hours of core courses, nine hours of technical track requirements, six hours of technical track electives and six hours of capstone experience. Students who are conditionally admitted should also complete the bridge or prerequisite courses prior to taking the track courses. Students need to maintain a GPA of 3.0 to stay and graduate from the MSIT program. Students will retake a course if he or she receives a grade below C including C-.

A student who chooses the project option is required to complete the project and get the official approval from the project advisor(s) before graduation. A student who chooses the thesis option is required to defend, complete, and submit a committee signed thesis before graduation.

All required courses must be completed within a three-year period from the date of acceptance into the program.
