IT Student Athlete Leads Balanced and Successful College Career

Courtney Dang

Courtney Dang is a fourth year in the School of Information Technology here at CECH.  Dang has also been a member of the University of Cincinnati’s nationally ranked Dance Team for four years, and was appointed one of two Team Captains this past year.  If balancing her studies and Dance Team involvement weren’t enough, Dang is also participating in her second co-op rotation with Cincinnati Bell, a leading provider of home phone, high speed, wireless and digital tv services.  She started her first co-op with them this past summer and is currently working for them Spring semester 2016.

During her semester as a co-op for Cincinnati Bell, Dang is responsible for gathering and updating data for various projects at the company.  One of her projects will be used for an upcoming software database project.  When asked how she has used what she learned in the School of IT to benefit her during co-op, Dang stated, “I never know what I’m going to run into some days, so it’s beneficial that the IT program teaches about different tracks and topics.  Last summer, I was given a task to create a macro in Excel, so that’s where learning computer programing came in handy.”

Dang is taking classes part-time during her co-op semester as well as staying involved in the Dance Team.  As captain of the team this year, she helps her teammates and coaches as much as possible by choreographing dances and cutting music for halftime National and World competition routines.

The UC Dance Team was ranked 2014 and 2015 National Champions.  Dang is also a gold medalist with Team USA for the past three years in dance.  Dang says, “It has been such an amazing experience to be a part of this program and to have been chosen to represent the country for a fourth year in a row this year.  Being a student athlete has helped me set priorities and time manage myself to remain focused on what I need to be doing. Because of how hectic my schedule can get, I've found a way to balance school, dance, co-op, my social life, and other hobbies.”

Dang started as a student in the Cybersecurity track of the BSIT program.  Recently, she was accepted into the elite IT accelerated program where she will be seeking an MS degree in Health Informatics in addition to her BSIT degree.  Dang is proud of all that she has accomplished and is involved with, saying, “It gets challenging at times with the demanding schedule, but it’s all about time management.”  For her fifth year at UC, Dang will continue her studies as an Information Technologies major, -- and of course continue participating with the UC Dance Team.
